Kentucky sisters and mother.<br /> This picture had been in a frame with no mat for many years. When the glass got broken the photograph was stuck to the shards of glass. When the glass was removed parts of the emulsion and photo went with it. Restoration included adjusting the color slightly, cropping, and filling in all the missing areas.

This picture had been in a frame with no mat for many years. When the glass got broken the photograph was stuck to the shards of glass. When the glass was removed parts of the emulsion and photo went with it. Restoration included adjusting the color slightly, cropping, and filling in all the missing areas.

  • Oklahoma homestead before.<br /> The original is almost 20" across, had been affixed to cardboard and torn apart at some point and one piece was lost. It's a black and white photograph that was hand painted and tinted. This restoration required scanning each piece separately, combining them and aligning the pieces correctly in Photoshop, filling in the cracks, rebuilding missing information, evening out the tones, adding contrast where needed, and cleaning up spots and small damage.

  • Mother and boys - Before.<br /> This 1950s photograph just needed the original color restored.

  • Groom before - this 1970s color photograph mainly suffered from color fading.
  • Groom after - contrast was added to be more like the original and spots were cleaned up.
  • Large portrait of man in Missouri - before.<br /> This had been displayed and stored in a wooden frame with no glass or other protection and had been damaged. It appeared that something wet came in contact with it and there had been an attempt to wipe it off, which ruined some of the emulsion of the photograph. It also had multiple scratches and small areas with the emulsion missing. It appears to be a slightly fuzzy photograph of a photograph with some finer details in the clothing added by hand.
  • Portrait of man in Missouri - after restoration.
  • Large portrait of woman in Missouri. As with the man's photograph, this one had been unprotected in a simple frame for many years. As a result it suffered physical damage to the print including punctures just under the eye. It also seems to be a photograph of a photograph without sharp detail. There is a dark line and a dark smudge on the front of her dress which may have been on the original photograph. Restoration included removing these, repairing the damage under the eye, and deleting small dust and scratches.

  • Digital restoration done by Lois Elling, 2011. Original photo was taken in Kansas in 1895.

  • Turner kids, Kansas 1895, after restoration.<br /> Restoration included improving contrast, repairing the tear, increasing detail to the girl's dress, removing the dark fingerprint on the boy in upper right, cleaning up spots, and cropping.
